Monster record trophy catfish caught in the St. Croix River

by fishermensknot

We all dream of catching a monster flathead out of a river or lake, but few ever do. Mark Mosby of St. Anthony was that lucky guy when he pulled a 80 lb. flathead catfish out of the St. Croix River.  The monster cat is a state record catch.

The fish was caught on 80 lb. line, but I’d like to know if it was caught on rod and reel and if he used braid.  We have plenty of huge trophy cats here in the Missouri River.

I’ve caught my fair share of flatheads out of there, which is the best place to catch big catfish in Missouri.  There are fishermen who pull giant cats out of the river – constantly.  But each fight is different and you never get tired of or bored of catching big catfish.

According to Wikipedia, the flathead can grow to a length of 61 inches and can weigh up to 123 pounds, making it the second-largest North American catfish, after the blue catfish. The average length is 25 to 46 inches. The maximum recorded life span is 24 years. read more at startribune.com
